The Fire Cisterns and Dry Hydrant were dedicated at a ceremony on August 18, 2005 at the Boat Launch Facility at Runaway Bay.

UPDATE! - Dry Hydrant Installed - Fire Protection Upgrades Complete
26 May 2005. The Dry Hydrant is now installed at the Boat Launch area. The Dry
Hydrant will allow the fire department to extract water from the lake into
their fire trucks. The Dry Hydrant and the two in ground 8,000 gallon water
Cisterns recently installed at Runaway Bay provide a rapid source of water
for fighting fires to Runaway Bay and the surrounding communities. Runaway
Bay was divided into three sections and the two cisterns and dry hydrant
placed strategically within the community to minimize access time to each
water source

 Fire Cisterns
The contractor for the “fire cistern” project began work on Tuesday, February 15th. The cisterns will be located at the corner of Runaway Bay Road and Indigo Run and at the corner of Hidden Cove Road and Thomas Court, both on common property.

This project is the first under the Virginia State Forestry Department guidance and will be a model for future installations throughout Virginia.

Runaway Bay HOA was able to obtain a grant from the Forestry Department to pay for the two 8,000 gallon in-ground water tanks, their installation, paving of two access driveways to those tanks, etc., all at no cost to the HOA. The HOA provided the common area to install the tanks.

The Runaway Bay Grounds and Maintenance Committee spearheaded this effort along with the Altavista Fire Department. The tanks will provide the fire department a source of water to fight fires and it will serve Runaway Bay and the surrounding communities. Also, a dry hydrant will be installed at the Boat Launch area, which will allow the fire department to pump water directly from the lake via the dry hydrant. The dry hydrant is scheduled for later this year. The two cisterns and dry hydrant are strategically placed to provide quick water access for the three major sections of Runaway Bay.

 Dry Hydrant

The Dry Hydrant at the Boat Launch will allow the local Fire Department to extract water directly from the lake into Fire Trucks providing a local source of water for fire fighting which will provide added security and safety to homes and properties in and around Runaway Bay.

Installation is scheduled to start the week of May 2, 2005. According to the contractor they do not anticipate any interference with the use of the boat launch ramp during construction. However, users should be aware of the construction schedule and possible interference or inconvenience while using the Boat Ramp.  We are sorry for any inconvenience the installation may cause.

Check back for updates on both projects.
